One thing that I have worked with in the past is Affirmations. Now I know a lot of people think they don’t work and for some, this is true. For others however, they can extremely helpful at getting us to focus on a specific aspect within our lives for a period of time in order that we can activate change! Yes, change takes work! It’s not going to be handed to you by the Universe on a plate in my opinion and if it does, on those rare occasions you’ll probably find that those are the more “traumatic” experiences we go through and which we hate at the time!
If you think about the Cognitive Behavioural Therapy approach, affirmations could be said to identify with this framework. By looking at our thoughts and focussing on our beliefs and attitudes about ourselves, we can then change our thoughts. When this is applied practically, over a period of time. This isn’t going to happen instantly, as I said, it takes work and is repetitive: then it can ultimately change how you feel which can, in turn, change your behaviour.
I think it’s important to also note that when working with affirmations, it’s always done with a view to changing ourselves, and in a positive way. We cannot change other people and ultimately we are not responsible for the choices that they make: but we can change our perceptions, be responsible for our selves, and look to increase positivity, growth, happiness and joy in our own lives!
